Budget Sunglasses Guide: UV400, Polarized and Fit Explained
7 October 2026
Good sunglasses do two jobs: they make bright days comfortable, and they protect your eyes from ultraviolet light. Price tells you very little about either. Here is what actually matters when you shop for a budget pair online, and which four pairs in our catalogue fit the brief.
1. UV400 is the number that counts
UV400 means the lens blocks light up to 400 nanometres, which covers UVA and UVB. It is the baseline for any pair you wear outdoors. Tint darkness is not protection: a dark lens without a UV filter can make things worse, because your pupils open wider behind it. If a listing does not state UV400 or an equivalent rating, skip it.
2. Polarized or not?
Polarized lenses cut glare from water, wet roads and car hoods. They help most for driving, fishing and cycling. They are not more protective than non-polarized UV400 lenses, and they can make some phone and dashboard screens harder to read. For city wear, either type is fine; for the road or the water, polarized is worth the small extra cost.
3. Frame material and weight
Plastic frames are cheap and light but can feel brittle. TR90, a flexible nylon blend, is tougher and bends back to shape. Wood looks distinctive and is light, though it needs more care around water. Metal and titanium blends are strong, but check that the nose pads are adjustable. A frame you forget you are wearing is usually the right one.
4. Fit matters more than style
Look at the lens width, bridge width and temple length if they are listed. The frame should sit without pinching behind the ears or sliding down your nose, and the lenses should cover your eyes from the side as well as the front. When measurements are missing from a listing, compare against a pair you already own.
Four pairs from the catalogue
KDEAM TR90 Titanium Sunglasses pairs a flexible TR90 frame with polarized UV400 lenses, a sensible all-round choice for driving and daily wear.
Zebra Wood Retro Cycling Sunglasses offers a handmade wood frame with UV400 lenses and a retro shape that stands out from plastic.
Unisex Sports Goggle Sunglasses is the practical pick for cycling and outdoor sport, with a wrap shape that keeps wind and dust out.
ZENOTTIC Eyewear Sunglasses is the more classic, fashion-first option when you want something for everyday wear.
Looking after them
Rinse dust off before wiping, use a microfibre cloth, and keep the pair in a case rather than loose in a bag. Scratches do not reduce UV protection, but they do add glare.
