How Each Movement Works

A quartz watch runs on a battery: an electric current vibrates a quartz crystal at a precise frequency, and a small motor moves the hands. An automatic watch has no battery — a mainspring inside winds itself from the natural motion of your wrist, and that stored energy drives a mechanical gear train. One is electronic, the other is purely mechanical.

Accuracy

Quartz wins here, decisively. A basic quartz movement is accurate to within about 15 seconds a month. Even a well-regulated automatic movement will typically drift several seconds per day, and can vary depending on how much you wear it, temperature, and wrist position overnight.

Maintenance

Quartz watches need a battery change every 1-3 years and otherwise run themselves. Automatics need regular wrist time to stay wound (or a watch winder if you rotate watches) and typically benefit from a service every few years to keep the mechanism lubricated. If you want to wear a watch and forget about it, quartz is the lower-maintenance choice by a wide margin.

Feel and Price

Automatic movements are more complex to manufacture, which is why automatic watches usually cost more at a given quality level than a comparable quartz watch.
